Frank James Hargrave was born in 2050, in the Free State of California. His parents were both Orks of the second generation, and therefore suffered the marginalization and contempt due to being metahumans.
From a low social and cultural level, they lived performing menial and sometimes dangerous jobs in the northern zone of the state. When the situation became untenable the family moved to Seattle, looking for a better life, something they weren't able to find, but at least could provide a small home for Frank and his three brothers, working hard in that low-income area. Ever since Frank was a child, he felt the need to get more than the miserable life he was subjected to. Although in his youth he was involved in small gangs, he wanted to see the world and build a future for himself. He decided that the best method was to join the army, which he did when he was 15 years old. After the hard basic training it was observed that Frank had desirable military qualities and they trained him to be part of a special unit. Frank was ecstatic, because he could work with the best, with quality equipment, on high-risk missions, and it satisfied his daring spirit. His first mission was engaging in guerrilla activities in Tir Tairngire, which the UCAS government wanted to destabilize. It where he acquired a lot of experience and forged some friendships. All this would serve him in the future. His unit was transferred to Amazonia, which at the time was embroiled in one of its regular skirmishes with Aztlan. UCAS wanted to check the advancement of Aztlan in that region and keep the conflict going to deplete its resources. That was an experience that would mark him seriously. The cruelty that characterized that battlefield was something that Frank did not expect and had to deal with a multitude of terrible war crimes. After four years of service in that place Frank decided he had had enough and that the government couldn’t ask more from him. He was tired of the horror and the senseless war. He left the special forces and returned home to Seattle to find himself, to make a new life. The situation was not at all better than when he left, so for a year he performed menial jobs, just enough to live. That was when he met Diane, a human. Their relationship arose almost as if it were something that already existed, since both understood each other completely. The two had experienced serious problems in their lives, Frank with the war, Diane with drug abuse. But both helped each other overcome their problems and soon had settled in a small apartment on the outskirts of the Metroplex. Finally it seemed that all personal demons were dispelled when his son, Joseph, was born. But the little Joseph got sick with a strange ailment, and despite all attempts by his parents, who invested all the money they had in obtaining a cure for their son, Joseph died when he was just two years old. It devastated the couple. The pain was so great that they could not continue together, and decided to separate, to try to overcome the pain alone. Diane wandered from one shelter to another, broken with pain, until finally she took a small job at a minor corporation. Frank, meanwhile, had lost his son and his wife, and he had only work as a means of escape. And there was only one thing he was good at, so he decided to become a mercenary for hire, a Shadowrunner. The missions are a way to earn a living and at the same time to have the feeling of being useful somehow. Whenever he can he sends some of his earnings to Diane, whom he sees occasionally, because they still have a good relationship. They even sleep together sometimes, but they know they will never be a couple again. They meet every 17th of the month at the grave of their son to leave a flower and if one of them is not able to go for any reason (and both do whatever is possible to not miss the date), the other brings a flower in their name. It is a date that is particularly painful for them both, because the memories come back. Neither has been able to rebuild their lives, even if they have had new partners, but nothing has lasted. Frank has had some lovers, and goes regularly to strip clubs, but has never had any serious relationships, simply because he can’t overcome what happened. |
